The 90kg Rice Challenge runs throughout the whole year and is the perfect social enterprise activity for your school, church or community group covering a range issues which are prevalent in today’s society including fair trade, sustainability, social enterprise and global citizenship. We are also delighted to now have a section on Climate Change
and how this is affecting the rice farmers in Malawi. This has been developed by our friends at WOSDEC and is relevant following the COP26 (the UN Climate Change Conference) held in Glasgow in 2021.
Over 800 schools, churches and community groups have completed this already – so why not join them? It is a fun and engaging project with excellent learning outcomes and it’s easy to organise and comes with a Challenge Education Pack. We have one for schools and one for churches, which feature plenty of information, lesson plans (or sermon outlines and prayers), ideas, promotional materials, recipes and activities to teach participants about Fair trade which will be sent to you along with your 90 x 1kg bags of delicious Great Taste award winning rice.

This is an easy way to engage participants, educate and inspire them on the good that fair trade does in our world. 90kg is the amount of rice a farmer in Malawi has to sell to provide a sustainable income and help them afford to send a child to secondary school for a year and so the participants can directly see that their buying decisions are helping provide a better life for those in some of the poorest communities in Malawi. It is a very visual and easy to understand concept which people can easily grasp and feel part of.
Another added bonus is that the Challenge counts towards your Fairtrade school and Fairtrade church awards.
We have had over 800 schools, churches, Fairtrade groups, community groups who have already undertaken the 90kg Rice Challenge and we would love for you to join them. It provides participants , both young and old, the opportunity to learn about current issues such as fair trade, global citizenship, sustainability, social enterprise, and now climate change. They can use what they have learned to come up with innovative ways to sell the 90 bags of rice and get encouraged and inspired about knowing that every bag they sell is helping to change lives. The purchase of Kilombero rice helps provides the smallholder farmers with a sustainable income and enables them to reinvest in their farms, feed and clothe their families, and be able to afford a secondary education for their children, helping families and communities to work their way out of poverty with dignity. You really are Changing Lives One Bag at a Time!
